da realsbet: It’s fair to say that Ipswich Town midfielder Flynn Downes hasn’t hit the big leagues just yet, but that isn’t for want of trying. Crystal Palace have a long-standing interest in the England U20 international which was well-documented in the summer.
da spicy bet: But Palace weren’t prepared to meet Ipswich’s asking price, so Downes has been forced to stay in the lower echelons of League One for the foreseeable future. However, Roy Hodgson has made it clear he wants to add creativity to the midfield, which is something the Eagles have arguably been lacking for a while now, so Palace chairman Steve Parish must return for the 21-year-old in the winter transfer window.
Ipswich manager Paul Lambert has insisted that he won’t stand in his way if he wants to move to Selhurst Park next year. He told TWTD: “The money (offered by Palace) wasn’t good, the money was nowhere near good enough. The bid itself was absolutely nowhere near.
“But if they came in with an offer that was incredible and Flynn went, then it would be brilliant for Flynn. I’m not going to sit here and deny a young kid the chance to go into the Premier League or anything like that, but the money had to be right for the football club.
“Flynn did great for us and if the club got an incredible offer, then I think the club would thank him for his efforts and he goes and tries to be what hopefully he’s going to turn out to be.
“This club can’t stand in a young kid’s way if the money’s really, really good.”
Last season, the Englishman made 29 appearances in the English third tier, whilst he scored one goal and supplied one assist, via Transfermarkt.
Downes is working his way back to fitness after he suffered a serious knee injury against MK Dons at the start of the month, but that didn’t stop Palace from signing Nathan Ferguson on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion. In fact, he still hasn’t made his first-team debut for the Eagles despite the fact he was their first signing of the summer.
It’s worth pointing out that Palace have the oldest squad in the top flight. Whilst Downes is clearly still a work in progress, he would be able to inject some much-needed youth and creativity into the midfield, especially when you consider the fact that the Eagles struggled to break down Brighton in the A23 derby after the international break.
Once hailed as an “outstanding” player by Matt Holland, the youngster has been tipped to “go a long way” by the Ipswich Town legend. For roughly around £4m, what a bargain he could be!
AND in other news, Crystal Palace must convince West Brom target Andros Townsend to sign a new contract…
