Garry Monk’s life as Sheffield Wednesday boss couldn’t have begun in better fashion as his side defeated local rivals Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from Steven Fletcher and Sam Winnall wrapped up a 2-0 victory.
The Owls lacked in possession, managing just 38.4%, but put in a classic away ‘snatch and grab’ type performance which moved them to within a point of the top six.
Wednesday’s new boss was without captain Tom Lees, who was absent through injury, so midfielder Barry Bannan took the reigns and put in a phenomenal leader-like showing which displayed what he could bring to their new era.

In what was his 150th league appearance for the south Yorkshire club as the 29-year-old partnered Sam Hutchinson in the centre of the park.
Bannan picked up the highest rating of any outfield player in Wednesday’s green away strip, recording 7.7 per WhoScored.
He was the man to superbly set up Winnall for his first Owls goal in over two years – the former Palace ace dinked a delicate ball straight into the path of the 28-year-old striker.
Bannan also recorded more touches (66) than any other Wednesday player, proving just how much he was involved in the victory. He also attempted two shots at goal and registered two key passes.
But he also did the dirty work defensively too – winning back possession seven times.
It is this level of performance that will help smooth Monk’s transition at the club, especially as he won’t truly be able to make his mark on the side until the transfer window swings round in January.
They’ll face a tougher test in Fulham this weekend, who will be rueing from West Brom’s late equaliser and if Bannan can put in a similar performance, they could well have every chance of success.
