Speaking to Portuguese publication Record, Louis Saha has admitted Manchester United made a “mistake” in not swooping for Bruno Fernandes this summer.
What did he say?
The Sporting CP star enjoyed an incredible campaign last season, registering an incredible 32 goals and 18 assists across all competitions.
Reports in recent weeks and months had continuously linked the 24-year-old with a move to Old Trafford, but a deal failed to materialise before the end of the transfer window in the Premier League.

Now, Saha has revealed the Red Devils are missing out on a “born leader”, and questioned their decision not to sign a creative midfielder.
He said (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News): “Bruno Fernandes is a player of great technical quality who could be extremely decisive at various points in United’s game. But more than that, he’s a born leader and that’s what Manchester United are missing this season.
“He’s undoubtedly a huge player and his market value should not be impeding for a club like United. Bruno Fernandes was absolutely impressive last season. Only time can tell, but judging from everything that has happened – United made a mistake by not buying Bruno Fernandes and not signing a creative midfield player.”
Creativity
When the counter-attacking style works, it damn sure looks good. But against both Wolves and Crystal Palace, the Red Devils’ necessity to break down compact defences proved too difficult to overcome. Jesse Lingard’s anonymous displays in the number ten role have simply compounded the problem of United not having a bona-fide playmaker to pull the strings.

Fernandes’ mind-boggling numbers last season point to someone who embraced the responsibility of being the side’s talisman, and he would have relished playing alongside United’s speedy attackers. The Portuguese star averaged 3.6 shots and 3.2 key passes per game in the league last year, and would have brought some much-needed impetus to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Even though it is still early days, the Manchester side may have made a massive mistake in not moving for the 24-year-old this summer.
