The England right-back enjoyed a fantastic World Cup but this season, he has endured a genuinely terrible campaign, with Spurs’ form fluctuating wildly.
And, again, on Saturday, he turned in a performance of woeful ineptitude as Spurs’ top-four hopes took a bitter blow in their 1-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth.
Now, admittedly, he did not get sent off, which is more than can be said for both Juan Foyth and Heung-Min Son. But that is where the praise stops.
Per WhoScored, Trippier was dribbled past three times at right-back, failed to make an interception, win a header or complete a dribble.
He had a pass completion rate of 69%, the second-fewest of any Spurs outfield player.
There is an argument that he is perhaps better than Serge Aurier in the defensive phase of the game; the Ivory Coast international is a walking yellow card.
But both players must be upgraded this summer, that much should be obvious for both Mauricio Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy.
Bin him off
A picture circulating on social media showed Trippier giving instructions to his team-mates after they were reduced to nine men; it is no wonder that they went on to lose.
Indeed, Trippier’s season has been characterised by absolutely awful defensive mistakes, namely his comedic own goal in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
It is a sad state of affairs for Spurs fans, who used to see Kyle Walker rampaging up and down the right flank. He was good in attack and perhaps a little lax in defence; Trippier cannot do either.
He was not done any favours by his team-mates on Saturday, with their heads going amid the pressure of the top-four race.
But he did nothing to grasp the game by the scruff of the neck and was a weak link in an already damaged chain on the south coast.
It’s time for Tottenham to move on – they can’t afford to carry Trippier for another season while trying to compete at the top of the Premier League. Transfermarkt value the former Burnley man at £31.5million, which would be a decent total to add to Spurs’ summer transfer kitty.
