da esoccer bet: Steven Gerrard is planning to land Charlton Athletic’s Karlan Ahearne-Grant on a pre-contract as Rangers plot their path forwards without Alfredo Morelos, per The Scottish Sun.
What’s the word?
The word coming out of Scotland is that the Charlton have been made aware of the Gers interest in taking their leading scorer at the end of the season, when his contract expires, and he will be available for nothing more than a development fee.
Ahearne-Grant has been with The Addicks for the past decade, after joining the club’s academy in 2009. The centre-forward later earned his senior call-up in 2014, and has been in terrific form since the start 2018.
After failing to register more than two goals in a season, a loan deal with Crawley Town reset the 21-year-old’s career and he returned the League Two outfit’s trust with nine in 15 games.
Lee Bowyer has since been able to capitalise on his new-found clinical touch in front of goal upon his return to Charlton, with the home-grown striker netting 13 times in 25 League One games, as well as assisting five.
With his contract up in the summer, however, the Reds could lose his services for nothing more than a minimal fee, but that has not stopped the club from turning away Brentford’s £500,000 January offer.
Rangers, on the other hand, hope they can convince him to sign a pre-contract with them, that would see the London-born ace link up with fellow inbound summer arrivals Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones.

Learning from past errors
The idea behind Rangers signing Ahearne-Grant is that the 21-year-old can replace the potential loss of Morelos, should the Gers accept a multi-million-pound offer for the Colombian in the summer.
Morelos has been the leading light at Ibrox so far this season with 12 league goals in 19 appearances, but could be set to leave as he chases one of Europe’s top divisions.
Taking Charlton’s leading scorer will also signal a turning point for Gerrard, as it shows the former Liverpool captain is learning from his past errors shown most significantly in the loan deal for AS Roma’s Umar Sadiq.
The Nigerian proved to be a complete flop in Scotland, and was axed mid-way through his loan deal having made just four appearances. Instead, Gerrard would be placing his faith in signing a young talent on permanent basis that he can nurture.
