da aposte e ganhe: Slaven Bilic might think that all is dandy for West Ham creatively this summer. The sublime Dimitri Payet and the breath-taking Manuel Lanzini would surely justify this position. However, with European football looming, they really must sign another player who can dominate the key pass statistic and weave between opposition defenders.
da apostebet: The Hammers may face periods without Payet and Lanzini, despite his impressive form, does not necessarily have the ability to carry the creative burden of such an ambitious club. Lanzini is only 23 years old, he is a sprog of Premier League football, relatively speaking.
West Ham are ready to take on Europe. Their manager is an ambitious man, their owners are clearly looking to build a dynasty and they are about to move to one of the most impressive sporting arenas in the world. The Hammers are on the cusp of becoming a true force, and this summer will be telling. Do they rest on their laurels? Or do they continue to spend extravagantly for the dream of becoming a Champions League club?
It’ll be fascinating to see what happens. Crucially, Bilic, Gold and Sullivan must be aware that Dimitri Payet cannot carry the team throughout the entirety of the campaign. His injury did not hurt the team as significantly as some may have thought this season, but a high-quality competitor for the role of primary creator is vital. Lanzini might step into that berth and, depending on Bilic’s preferred formation, it could be a case of signing another natural wide man. Payet is a show man, a wonderful character and a great entertainer, but, having just turned 29, he could be a serious injury away from hitting real decline.
There are no guarantees with Payet; well, there are no guarantees in any sport. The Frenchman has been wonderful this season, yes, yet his final productivity for the season is not as jaw-dropping as some would let you believe. He has been exceptional considering the team he is in and his injury lay-off, but West Ham have developed a dependency that could quickly become unhealthy. The Irons have the resources and pull to attract more players of Payet’s quality and they must do so this summer. Not only in the attacking third, but throughout the team. Payet needs competition for his spot and, if West Ham are to challenge in the Europa League, will need quality to rotate.
The options are there. European football should make it easier for the Hammers to attract players and the success of this campaign has reinstated them as a desirable club. Payet’s arrival was a sign of a changing club, a club with a dream, a club that had realised the potential they had. With the promise of regular minutes, matches at the Olympic Stadium and European football, West Ham will be able to attract players that they could only have dreamt of before.
The Boleyn hero must be supported, though. The squad needs upgrades elsewhere and depth will be pivotal in achieving their ambitions, so there is little alternative other than to splash out this summer. Invest wisely once again and West Ham could be a top six regular. Although he is the star, the best player and the fan favourite, emotion must be taken out of it. Payet cannot do it alone and West Ham are in need of another creative, goalscoring wizard who can wreak havoc between the lines.
