da roleta: It has been another decent week of results for Chris Wilder’s Oxford United with seven points coming in the last three games all assisted by clean sheets.
These last few games have proved just how excellent the back-four have been even as Michael Duberry had to sit out the last couple of matches with a slight knock. Former Chelsea youngster Harry Worley has come and performed superbly in Duberry’s absence and it looks like he may finally be starting to live up to his undoubted potential.
Jake Wright had his best game of the season last Saturday when the U’s held on for a valuable point against fellow promotion chasing Cheltenham Town. The United captain won every challenge he went for, be it in the air or on the ground, and played the ball around the back with such confidence.
Ryan Clarke has been in inspired form all season and with the two centre backs playing at their best at the moment, we look pretty much unbeatable at the back.
After his fine recent performance I think if we do fail to win promotion this season we could be facing an uphill battle to keep the highly-regarded Clarke at the Kassam Stadium.
It was just the kind of defensive performance needed in a game that saw only two attempts on target for either team. At times Cheltenham dominated the play and managed to keep Peter Leven under wraps for the majority of the game.
They looked certain to take all three points but the rear-guard held firm and dealt with everything the Robin’s could throw at them.
Unfortunately we never looked like scoring and a point is probably all the Yellows deserved. The midfield was marked out of the game for large parts and it was unusual to see Asa Hall so quiet after the run in the team he’s had lately.
It has been a fantastic month for Hall who has scored five goals in seven games and is in the form of his career. It’s not just the goals that has been impressive about the 25-year-old but his overall play looks so much more confident than last season even though he has spent the majority of this season on the bench.
Scott Rendell has also done really well as the lone striker while James Constable was suspended and deserves to be in the team. However now that Constable’s back its likely Rendell will be seeing a bit more of the substitute’s bench between now and the end of the season.
We entertain Morecambe on Saturday where we will be looking to take all three points and hopefully our defence will make it four clean sheets in four games to help cement our place in the play-offs positions.
