In the majority of football clubs, the players have very little say in who is bought and sold.
It could be a slightly different story when you factor in some of the best players in world football.
Messi is more than just a talisman for Barcelona; the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is the face of the club, and it would not be surprising if he had influence with regards to transfers.
It seems as though the club also uses the players to get into the ears of their targets, but it is unclear whether that has happened in this case.
Should Tottenham be worried?
Not at the moment. Even if Barcelona do show an interest in Alli, Spurs have no pressure to sell.
The midfielder signed a new six-year contract in September 2016, so any club that wants to prise him away from the North London outfit will have to come up with plenty of cash.
Also, given how stubborn Spurs chairman Daniel Levy can be, interested suitors would have to table world-record figures.
From Alli’s point of view, he has no need to leave Tottenham yet as he is an integral part of the team and the club seems to be going from strength to strength on the pitch.
If the 21-year-old maintains his form, then the big boys will come calling eventually.
